The beginner class at my fitness center is structured to give knowledge of basic poses (which become the building blocks to more complex poses later) and also establish basic strength and flexibility.

Don't be nervous! If the class is titled "Yoga Basics" then most everyone in the class will be at your level. There is a special breathing technique used in Yoga, called Pranayama, which will probably be touched on but you will not be expected to master this technique immediately.

My class provided the Yoga mats, blocks, stretching straps, etc. But you may want to purchase your own Yoga mat, at the very least. The blocks are used if you have limited flexibility--for example, if you must bend forward at the waist and place your palms flat on the ground without bending your knees, you may place blocks beside your feet and put your palms on those if you are unable to touch the ground.

The first time I went to a yoga class, I was just doing my usual workout at the gym and noticed that they had a class starting, so I thought I'd try it. I had on my regular outfit of t-shirt and shorts. How embarrassing! With all the bending and my short shorts, I'm sure I flashed someone more than I should have! Be sure and wear yoga pants!

We did poses like Downward Facing Dog, Child's Pose, Warrior I, Warrior II, Bridge Pose, Cat-Cow Stretch, Cobra Pose, Hands and Knees Balance, etc... Very simple, straight-forward poses and you will go through them many times so that you get the hang of them.

The main thing is to not worry about what you look like. It is an extremely relaxing, stress-free environment. Enjoy!
