Whether it is at home or at work, it seems like you never have enough time just for yourself anymore. We have a lot more modern conveniences than our parents and grandparent had but it still hasn’t given us any more leisure time. If you feel that your life has gotten out of control, then practicing yoga might just be the solution that will unify the mind, body and spirit. Yoga exercises are great for relieving stress and could be the best solution. If you are new at yoga then the following seven tips will help start you off on the road to a much more centered and less stressful life.

Before starting any exercise routine, it always advisable that you seek the approval from your doctor. This is especially true if you should have any illnesses such as high blood pressure, glaucoma, or heart disease. It is always important that you follow your doctor’s recommendation whenever planning a change in diet or starting a new exercise routine.

Start out by finding a yoga class that best suits your abilities. Always discuss with the prospective yoga class teacher about the yoga routine before ever signing up. You don’t want to sign up for a yoga class that might not suit your abilities. Always take it one step at a time and never hurry the progress. Try out a few beginner yoga classes for a few times before starting anything more advanced. In other words, don’t move ahead before you have mastered those beginner yoga postures. This will allow your body to adjust to the yoga exercises.

Always listen to your body and know its limitations. You need to be aware of your physical abilities so that you will not hurt yourself. Make sure that your yoga class instructor also knows your level of experience and limitations. Don’t allow anyone to push on to the next level until you are confident that you are ready. This should be a fun and relaxing experience and not something that you dread doing.

If there is not a yoga class in your area, you can always purchase books or DVDs to get you started. Most yoga instructors also offer private sessions which would give you more of a one on one training experience.

Get a yoga buddy to keep you motivated and accountable. Someone else to practice with can always be very motivational and can be a great way to keep you interested.

Be sure to always eat lightly before attending the yoga class. Never exercise on a full stomach because it could cause cramping or make you feel nauseous. An empty stomach is best but if you do feel you need to eat then make sure it is something light or wait at least two hours after eating a heavy meal before exercising. Practicing yoga routines can be very enjoyable and will definitely relieve all the stresses of the day.

Have you ever consider yoga as an alternative to doing a strength training workout? Strength training is a great way to get in shape. Most people though probably don’t want the massive muscles that many bodybuilders tend to get when showing off in competitions. Most of us that have considered doing strength training would probably say that we are more concerned with feeling good about ourselves when putting on a swimsuit. We are not looking to build large masses of muscles as we see on the bodybuilder.

Most consumers don’t realize though that for the bodybuilder it takes a very strict regimen of workouts and eating lots of protein with little or no fat to have the bodies that they show off in competitions. People that want to maintain muscle mass or add a little tone or muscle strength can get this through using simple free weights. Alternate your strength training with some yoga or stretching exercises. If you do strength training and alternate your workout with yoga then there is little risk of bulking up too much.

You can gradually increase the weights as you work out over a period of time. Be careful though of not using too much weight at once because it easy to sprain a muscle and hurt yourself. Start out with a smaller weight such as five or ten pounds and after a few repetitions move up to the next level.

For most of us, yoga probably seems like a difficult concept and something that we wouldn’t even dream of doing. You are probably wondering just how in the world any person could do something so complicated as those yoga postures that you’ve seen people do. After all some of those yoga techniques have a person looking like some kind of human pretzel so there is no way any person in their right mind would even want to do anything like that. And for some just the word yoga brings up some kind of archaic spiritual belief that has a person quit their job and moving out to the middle of nowhere. But yoga is really a very basic practice and there is nothing necessarily mystique or out of ordinary about it.

If you’ve had the opportunity to visit a country where it has been established for generations – India, Japan, China, and others – it’s really rather, well, “ordinary”. The practice of yoga came to the west back in 1893 when one of India’s celebrated gurus, Swami Vivekananda, was welcomed at the World Fair in Chicago. He is now known for having sparked the West’s interest in yoga.

Literally, the word yoga comes from the Sanskrit term Yug, which means: “to yoke, bind, join, or direct one’s attention”. At the same time, yoga can also imply concepts such as fusion, union, and discipline. The sacred scriptures of Hinduism (an ancient belief system from India that has a global presence) also defines yoga as “unitive discipline”; the kind of discipline that, according to experts Georg Feuerstein and Stephan Bodian in their book Living Yoga, leads to inner and outer union, harmony and joy. In essence, yoga is most commonly understood as conscious living; of tapping into one’s inner potential for happiness (what Sankrit refers to as ananda).

If you really want to understand the topic yoga then it is helpful to also know about all the misunderstandings that are centered on this topic. Authors and yoga scholars Feuerstein and Bodian help us understand yoga by telling us what it is not.

What Yoga Isn’t:
Yoga is NOT calisthenics (marked by the headstand, the lotus posture or some pretzel-like pose). While it is true that yoga involves many postures – especially in hatha yoga – these are only intended to make people get in touch with their inner feelings.

Yoga is NOT a system of meditation – or a religion – the way many people are misled to believe. Meditation is only part of the whole process of bringing ourselves into the realm of the spiritual.

What is the essence of Yoga?
Virtually all yogic science and philosophy states that a human being is but a fragment of an enormous universe, and when this human being learns to “communion” with this vastness, then he/she attains union with something that is bigger than him/her. This attachment or tapping into something bigger thus enables one to walk the true path of happiness. By flowing along with the force, the individual is able to discover truth. And with truth comes realization; but to attain realization, our words, thoughts and deeds must be based on truth. People attend courses on yoga and go to studios to learn new techniques in yoga, but yoga teacher Tim Miller said that “True yoga begins when leaving the studio; it’s all about being awake and being mindful of your actions”.

Did you know that yoga is more than learning how to relax and be more flexible? People now believe that yoga can also help with weight control as well as ease lower back pain and can help with insomnia and even some heart diseases. Yoga can actually do more for your body than just keeping it fit and flexible. Studies have now shown that people who did not practice yoga gained more weight over a 10 year period than those that did. In other words, yoga helps with weight loss and maintenance.

How do you get healthy with yoga?

By adding yoga regularly to your daily routine as well as exercising and watching your diet, you may find that it will help with weight loss as well as weight maintenance. If you are having any lower back problems, then yoga can improve the range of motion in your hips to help reduce lower back pain. Studies have shown that yoga can increase lower back flexibility and decrease lower back pain. Keep in mind though that you should always see your physician if you are experiencing any persistent back pain prior to starting any exercise program such as yoga.

And if you are experiencing problems with insomnia then a daily routine of yoga practice of meditation and breathing can help to calm your body and mind. Yoga breathing technique helps to lower your heart rate and calm your nervous system before retiring at night.

Just practicing yoga for an hour just three times a week can make your heart healthier. A study was done that showed men and women who practiced yoga also improved their blood pressure. Yes you can get healthy with yoga so why not start today.

I want to make sure I have the right technique; I don't want to be doing it wrong and hurt myself. Are there books I can get on basic yoga or something?

While lately Yoga has come to signify no more than several exercises, which are used for keeping the body in shape and duly flexible, Yoga goes way beyond this and is actually more a way of life than just a few ‘asanas’.

Originating from the Sanskrit term ‘yuj’ which means to unite, Yoga is the path taken in the pursuit of uniting oneself with ‘God’ or ‘Spirit’. Yoga is in no way a religious practice, but refers to God as being your inner spirit or soul.

The benefits of pure Yoga though definitely involving the physical being, are more about achieving inner peace and tranquility. Any one seeking to fully gain the benefits from Yoga must begin with the understanding that Yoga meditation, spiritual yoga and yoga exercises go hand in hand. One without the others is quite futile. Most of us seem to get carried away by shortcut methods, and simply follow some basic exercises while completely ignoring the holistic advantages of the system.

Being one of the five principles of Yoga, meditation is regarded as the constant observation of the mind. While the physical Yoga positions develop the human body muscles, meditation is designed to enhance the mind power. Understanding that inner peace and outer well-being are linked, and that ignoring one will automatically affect the other adversely too, is of prime importance here.

The human body is complexly linked to the soul and thus, it is impossible to expect one to flourish while the other is ignored. It is imperative that pure Yoga be adopted under the correct and wholesome guidance of learned teachers or literature, to enable you to fully understand the benefits of spiritual Yoga, and learn both Yoga exercises and Yoga meditation in sync with each other. Unless the body and soul are both worked upon simultaneously via Yoga and meditation, it is unlikely that full benefits will be reaped.

Seeking literature on pure Yoga that aims towards its holistic benefits is the first step to moving in this direction, and discovering the various stages of the human mind is the first step crucial to the understanding of spiritual Yoga. Knowing about the science of Yoga as well as its practice, will help in reaping the benefits of Yoga in a holistic manner, and will enable you to enrich your body, mind and soul.
